In Silico Identification of MicroRNAs with B/CYDV Gene Silencing Potential BABT
Bouallègue,Maryem; Bouktila,Dhia; Mezghani-Khemakhem,Maha; Capy,Pierre; Makni,Mohamed.
ABSTRACT Computational investigation of a set of publicly available plant microRNAs revealed 19 barley- and other plants-encoded miRNAs and their near-complement reverse sequences (miRNA*) that have potential to bind all B/CYDV open reading frames (ORFs) except ORF0 and ORF6. These miRNAs/miRNAs*, their binding positions and targets are discussed in the context of biological protection of cereals against B/CYDV, based on antiviral silencing.

Potassium-modulated physiological performance of mango plants infected by Ceratocystis fimbriata Bragantia
Cacique,Isaias Severino; Bispo,Wilka Messner Silva; Araujo,Leonardo; Aucique-Pérez,Carlos Eduardo; Rios,Jonas Alberto; Silva,Leandro Castro; Rodrigues,Fabrício Ávila.
ABSTRACT Mango wilt, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fimbriata, is an important disease affecting mango production. In view of the beneficial effects of potassium (K) in other profitable crops and the lack of information about the effect of macronutrients on mango wilt development, the present study aimed to evaluate how mango plants supplied with K respond physiologically when infected by C. fimbriata. Mango plants (» 3 years old) from cultivar Ubá were grown in plastic pots containing 58 mg of K·dm−3 (original K level based on the chemical analysis of the substrate) or in plastic pots with substrate amended with a solution of 0.5 M potassium chloride (KCl) to achieve the rate of 240 mg K·dm−3. Disease symptoms were more pronounced in inoculated plants...

Superoxide: a two-edged sword BJMBR
Superoxide (O2-) is the compound obtained when oxygen is reduced by one electron. For a molecule with an unpaired electron, O2- is surprisingly inert, its chief reaction being a dismutation in which it reacts with itself to form H2O2 and oxygen. The involvement of O2- in biological systems was first revealed by the discovery in 1969 of superoxide dismutase, an enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of O2-. Since then it has been found that biological systems produce a bewildering variety of reactive oxidants, all but a few arising ultimately from O2-. These oxidants include O2- itself, H2O2 and alkyl peroxides, hydroxyl radical and other reactive oxidizing radicals, oxidized halogens and halamines, singlet oxygen, and peroxynitrite. These various oxidants...
